Racing

Three main classes of dinghy are sailed at Minima are Enterprises, Merlins and Solos. We also have a lively Handicap class with Toppers, Lasers and a number of other boats. Each class has its own Captain who will help you understand the pros and cons of sailing a particular boat type and can advise on how to become an owner if you want to take that step.

Dinghy racing at Minima consists of several race series during the season in addition to one-off events such open meetings when we welcome visitors from other clubs and special Bank Holiday racing programmes.

The main series are:
  • Wednesday Evening Series – handicap racing based on PY ratings
  • Saturday Pursuit Series – group starts depending on previous performance
  • Summer Series – Sunday afternoon racing with class starts for Enterprises, Merlins, Solos and Handicap classes
  • Autumn Series – Class racing with a mass start every Sunday afternoon plus a parallel Personal Handicap series where your handicap is based on your previous season’s performance
Every Bank Holiday and on a few other occasions during the year Minima has a number of special events, some class or pursuit racing and others team racing. Twice a year we hold a long distance race which exploits the entire stretch of water between Kingston Bridge and Hampton Court Bridge. Finally at the end of the year there is a 'Fun Race' usually held on the last day of the Christmas holidays. It has a fun theme or rules and is followed by a warming lunch in a local restaurant.

Team racing is a particular historic speciality with many of the inter-club events on the Thames being between teams. Team racing has its own particular set of rules aimed at pitting one complete team directly against the other rather than individual boats. It is great fun for all, providing more of a spectator sport than other forms of dinghy racing – the panoramic view of the Thames from our balcony comes into its own. All of the main classes at Minima take part in one or other of the team events during the year.

Minima has a secure dinghy park on Middlesex bank opposite the club. The racing fee due for each members boat (50% discount for any after the first) includes a spot here as well as the administrative fees related to racing. If you need to work on your boat undercover there is space in the Club which can be pre-booked for short periods with the Honorary Boatswain.
