Going To Sea

Minima members do not restrict their sailing to the river Thames. Most summers a group of intrepid sailors tow their boats to the seaside, usually Chichester Harbour, for a day trip on salt water. It’s great to be able to sail in a straight line for more than a few tens of yards without having to tack! Boats and crew are liberated in such relatively enormous expanses of water whilst other members take a walk along the shoreline. A picnic on the beach followed by a sail back to the launching point, make for a wonderful day out for all the family.

Amongst the membership are owners of larger craft ranging from narrow boats to ocean capable-yachts. Larger boats always need crew so cruising and occasional racing opportunities are sometimes available, if you are interested ask at the bar.

More formal coastal sailing can be arranged through Minima’s reciprocal agreement with Phoenix Yacht Club (PYC). Phoenix own two superb yachts, a Sadler Starlight 39 - 'Spellbinder of Wytch' and  'Quartette', a Westerly Oceanquest (AC).  Both are based in Portsmouth Harbour giving easy access to the Solent and the English Channel. The boats are available for both weekday and weekend sailing, for cruising, racing or training, at very reasonable rates. The sailing skills of PYC members range from Yachtmaster (Ocean) to absolute beginners, so no one is left out and all are made to feel very welcome. Members of the club have participated in races such as 'Round the Island', Cowes Week and the Fastnet Race in the PYC yachts, so there are plenty of opportunities to broaden your sailing experience. Please refer to the Phoenix Yacht Club website for more information on sailing with them or just ask at the Minima bar.
