Coastal Sail - July 2013

The Sailing Committee decided to reinstate the tradition of an annual coastal sail this year and also to take advantage of a growing connection between Minima Yacht Club and Hythe Sailing Club on Southampton Water. Three current members of Minima, Laurence Cox, Rod Morris, Steve Collins are also members of Hythe, and Ray Davies berths his cruiser in Hythe Marina.

Twenty-four Minima members made the journey to the South Coast on Sunday 14th July on a day that the River was closed for Kingston Rowing Regatta. The tide on the day was ideal with plenty of water all afternoon thanks to the unique double high water on Southampton Water. However, on arrival at Hythe, as the slide show indicates, we were greeted with a flat calm.

After a taking a packed lunch we took to the water in three cruisers, ‘Hawkeye’ (Laurence Cox), ‘Limelight’ (Ray Davies) and ‘Lazy Fox (Steve Collins) and two dinghies, Rod Morris’ Wayfarer and one of the Club Argos. After ‘gilling’ around for an hour or so, a sea breeze kicked in about 15:00 hours and provided perfect sailing conditions. The temperature in Southampton, with the sea breeze, was around 220C which came as a welcome relief from the blazing heat in London.

After sailing, we relaxed on the Hythe SC lawn and enjoyed a DIY barbecue. In a interesting comparison with Minima YC, the bar was shut so we had go out and buy some cans form the local convenience store!

A big thank you goes to Hythe SC for hosting the event and letting us use their facilities.
