Canoe Adventure - July 2013

This particular Saturday was in the particularly hot spell, and unusually I had shopping to do in Kingston which I was well advised to do early. I arrived, feeling far from cool, at Bentalls a little after nine a.m. to order our replacement bathroom lamp. Shopping for new trainers, sports socks and a sun hat took until ten o’clock, then I panted my way to the club house by about 10.15 to see if the swallows were doing anything with their new nest. I didn’t get as far as the nest! Opening the new side door I was surprised to find Steve Collins waiting in the cool, shady tea area, as the paddlers grilled themselves over at the dinghy park for their Twickenham outing. Not being a paddler, I had scarcely noticed the trip on the Upcoming Events Calendar.

Steve asked me if I’d like to come along, as the launch was being used to take along the partner of one of the paddlers and his small daughter. The destination was the White Swan at Twickenham for lunch. After a few seconds’ thought, I said ‘Why not?’ and into the launch the shopping went. I had actually brought my camera along to show the Bentalls sales staff a picture of the old lamp which needed replacing. So this impromptu trip by launch with the paddlers was an ideal chance to make a little illustrated feature about them. I’ll let the photos do most of the talking - You can find the full slideshow in the Gallery section here: Canoe Adventure - 2013
